At Autism Spectrum Psychotherapy Ltd, we recognise that neurodivergence can shape how partners communicate, experience emotions, manage conflict and express intimacy. Our neurodiversity-affirming couples therapy supports couples where one or both partners are autistic, have ADHD or are AuDHD.
We understand that relationship difficulties can arise when partners have different communication styles, sensory needs, emotional regulation patterns or expectations. Our approach aims to help couples understand these differences without blaming either partner or expecting one person to conform to neurotypical relationship norms.
Our approach includes:
- Understanding each partner: Exploring individual needs, strengths, communication preferences and lived experiences.
- Communication and mutual understanding: Helping partners recognise differences in how they express emotions, interpret language and communicate needs.
- Managing conflict: Identifying triggers and patterns of escalation, and developing personalised strategies to navigate disagreements safely and constructively.
- Understanding intention and impact: Exploring how a partner’s intentions may differ from how their words or actions are experienced, while validating both perspectives.
- Sensory and emotional needs: Considering sensory sensitivities, overwhelm, shutdown, transitions and the need for space or recovery time.
- Reducing masking and blame: Creating space for both partners to express themselves authentically without shame, pressure or assumptions about what a relationship should look like.
- Building practical strategies: Developing mutually agreed ways to manage conflict, share responsibilities, negotiate needs and strengthen connection and intimacy.
Our approach recognises that relationship difficulties are not necessarily the result of a lack of care, empathy or commitment. Partners may simply process information, communicate or respond to stress differently. We work collaboratively with couples to develop greater understanding, respect individual differences and find relationship strategies that work for both partners.
Our aim is to help couples feel understood, strengthen their connection and build a relationship in which both partners’ needs, identities and differences are respected.
