At Autism Spectrum Psychotherapy Ltd, we recognise that neurodivergent individuals may experience and process trauma differently. Our approach to Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is flexible, collaborative and adapted to each person’s individual needs.
We aim to provide a supportive therapeutic environment where autistic, ADHD and AuDHD clients feel understood, respected and in control of their therapeutic journey.
Our neuro-affirming approach to EMDR includes:
- Individualised treatment: Adapting EMDR to each person’s communication style, sensory needs, processing preferences and emotional regulation.
- Clear communication and preparation: Explaining the process in advance, using clear instructions and allowing time for questions and processing.
- Safety and emotional regulation: Establishing appropriate stabilisation strategies and ensuring the client feels sufficiently prepared before trauma processing begins.
- Sensory adaptations: Tailoring bilateral stimulation, including eye movements, tapping or auditory stimulation, according to individual comfort and sensory preferences.
- Flexible pacing: Adjusting the duration, intensity and structure of sessions, with breaks and additional processing time when needed.
- Collaboration and consent: Maintaining ongoing consent, welcoming feedback and adapting or pausing interventions if the client feels overwhelmed or uncomfortable.
- Recognition of neurodivergent experiences: Understanding that trauma and distress may be associated with bullying, rejection, masking, discrimination or repeated experiences of being misunderstood, as well as other traumatic events.
Our approach recognises that neurodivergence is not something to be treated or corrected. Instead, we adapt the therapeutic process to the individual, respecting their identity, strengths and needs.
Our aim is to support trauma recovery, emotional wellbeing and a greater sense of safety and self-understanding, without requiring clients to mask their neurodivergent traits or conform to neurotypical expectations.
