At Autism Spectrum Psychotherapy Ltd, we recognise that traditional therapeutic approaches do not always meet the needs of neurodivergent individuals. Our approach to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is flexible, collaborative and adapted to each person’s individual needs, strengths and experiences.
We work with autistic, ADHD and AuDHD individuals to help them understand their emotions, manage anxiety, navigate challenging situations and develop strategies that support their wellbeing.
Our approach to CBT may include:
- Understanding your experience: Exploring how neurodivergence, sensory processing, executive functioning, emotional regulation and past experiences may affect your mental health.
- Adapting therapeutic techniques: Using clear communication, practical strategies, visual or written resources, and a pace that feels comfortable for you.
- Working collaboratively: Developing an understanding of your difficulties together, rather than making assumptions about your experiences or challenging your thoughts without considering their context.
- Supporting emotional regulation:Identifying triggers, recognising signs of overwhelm and developing personalised ways to manage distress.
- Addressing environmental barriers: Recognising that difficulties may arise not only from individual thoughts and behaviours, but also from inaccessible environments, misunderstanding and a lack of appropriate support.
- Respecting your identity: Supporting you to understand yourself, build self-acceptance and achieve your personal goals without pressure to mask your neurodivergent traits or conform to neurotypical expectations.
We recognise that some individuals have previously found therapy unhelpful or distressing. Your experiences will be taken seriously, and we welcome questions, feedback and disagreement. If an intervention does not feel right for you, we will work together to understand why and consider a different approach.
Our aim is not to change who you are, but to help you understand yourself, reduce distress and find ways of living that work for you.
